Gerund or infinitive theory

It can be a little difficult to know when to use gerunds and infinitives.

Here is a summary of different words that are usually followed by either by gerund or infinitive:




Some verbs can be followed by gerund or infinitve. However, in some cases the meaning can change depending on whether we use one or the other.

For instance, verbs such as like/hate/prefer,  express like or dislike when followed by a gerund: 

I like getting up late at the weekend (I enjoy it)

On the other hand, when followed by infinitive they express habitual preference, something that we do not necessarily like or enjoy but consider wise, right or useful:

I like to be punctual (It's important to be punctual and I am)
